Severe tropical storm Jangmi ripped across Japan on Wednesday (June 3), with fierce winds and torrential rain disrupting transport and businesses, and knocking out power for tens of thousands of homes.
Passengers at Tokyo’s Haneda Airport faced delays and cancellations, with airlines including major Japanese carriers Japan Airlines and All Nippon Airways cancelling nearly 900 international and domestic services on Wednesday morning.
“We were supposed to go back to Hong Kong, but then our flight got delayed four hours, and now we’re unable to check in any luggage. I’m really, really anxious,” said 24 year-old airline passenger Sun Jingwen.
Jangmi continued to track northeast on Wednesday, passing near the greater Tokyo area with maximum sustained winds of up to 25 metres (82 feet) per second, Japan's Meteorological Agency said, adding that some areas along the Pacific coast were at risk of "life-threatening disasters".
The storm had cut power to nearly 60,000 households as of Wednesday morning, government spokesperson Minoru Kihara said during a regular press briefing.
