Filipino actress Dolly De Leon once again showcased her acting prowess, this time on Apple TV's dark comedy-thriller series “Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed."
As the only Filipino among the show's cast, De Leon has been receiving positive feedback from viewers online for both her performance and portrayal of the character.
Apple TV posted a clip on its Instagram page featuring a scene between De Leon and Canadian actress Tatiana Maslany. The sequence shows De Leon, as Detective Gonzalez, inside a room, casually nibbling when Maslany's character enters.
“Thank you for seeing me. You want some cashews?” De Leon asks. Maslany shakes her head. “No? Okay,” De Leon said.
The conversation quickly turns serious as Gonzalez reveals details about a crime that appears to be connected to information previously provided by Maslany's character.
“So, I ran down those addresses you gave me. Guess what? A sex worker was found dead in one of them. The responding officer sent a photo. Sure looked like your guy,” De Leon said.
De Leon then shifts into a more commanding tone, telling Maslany, “I’m gonna give you one chance. If you’ve got anything to tell me, you’re gonna wanna tell me now. Right now.”
The clip generated enthusiastic reactions online, with viewers commending the veteran actress’ performance, her onscreen rapport with Maslany, and the depth she brought to her character.
A viewer applauded De Leon's portrayal, writing, “Love that police woman. She’s not a one or even two-dimensional character.” Others were also enthusiastic seeing De Leon and Maslany share the screen.
Many viewers also took notice of De Leon's natural Filipino accent. Filipino fans commended her approach to Detective Gonzalez, appreciating her decision stick to her real accent instead of using the thicker, contrived accent often used to portray Filipino-American characters in US TV shows.
As one commenter wrote, “It’s refreshing to hear a Filipino accent that is natural and not exaggerated.”
"Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed" stars Tatiana Maslany as Paula, divorced and looking to add excitement to her love life. Her life takes a dark turn as she finds herself caught in a perilous mix of blackmail and murder. The series premiered on Apple TV on May 20, with new episodes released weekly.
De Leon, 57, continues to build an impressive international résumé. Her performance in "Triangle of Sadness" earned her prestigious accolades in the Guldbagge Award and the Los Angeles Film Critics Association Award for Best Supporting Actress. She is the first Filipino to be nominated in the Golden Globe and BAFTA awards.
She was also part of the thriller series “Nine Perfect Strangers” alongside Nicole Kidman, Samara Weaving, and Henry Golding.
