Tom Holland has been quite frank about his past struggles with alcohol, saying he made a decision to quit after his drinking started affecting his work, health and personal life.
In a recent appearance on the video podcast “Good Hang with Amy Poehler,” the “Spider-Man” actor shared that he reached a point where he “couldn’t put it down,” which led him to stop drinking.
Holland, 30, said the first year of sobriety was challenging and described it as the toughest personal issue he has faced. During that period, he said the experience made him aware of the limited social options of people who do not drink alcohol which later inspired him to explore new ideas.
That light-bulb moment led him to develop new shandy-style drinks under his non-alcoholic beer brand Bero. He explained that the idea was shaped in part by two important women in his life. One is his partner Zendaya, who has never been a drinker and has never acquired a taste for beer.
He wanted to create something the actress could genuinely enjoy while still fitting into social situations where drinks are usually involved.
The other inspiration came from his mother, who suggested making shandies or beer cocktail —a mix of beer and lemonade. That idea eventually helped shape the new range, which includes flavors like grapefruit, lemon-lime, blackberry yuzu, and elderflower. He described it as an attempt to bridge the gap between traditional beer and alcohol-free alternatives.
Holland said he wanted something that works in his own alcohol-free lifestyle while still being enjoyable for people like Zendaya who do not drink.
Aside from this personal project, Holland has a busy schedule ahead, as he stars in “The Odyssey” directed by Christopher Nolan, and in the upcoming Marvel film “Spider-Man: Brand New Day.” Incidentally, Zendaya also appears in both films.
