Among the 15 victims of a mass shooting at Australia’s Bondi Beach targeting a Jewish Hanukkah celebration were individuals who tried to stop the attack, as well as others who died protecting friends and family, according to relatives, officials, and local media reports.
The victims ranged in age from 10 to 87. Twenty-one survivors remain hospitalized. A 50-year-old alleged gunman was shot dead by police, while his alleged accomplice and son, 24, has emerged from a coma after sustaining gunshot wounds during an exchange of fire with officers. Funerals for the victims began on Wednesday.

Boris Tetleroyd
A husband and father, Tetleroyd was killed in the Bondi attack, during which his son was also injured, according to a fundraising post shared by his niece on social media.
“Our family is grieving the sudden and violent loss of a beloved husband and father,” Leia Roitour wrote, adding that Tetleroyd’s son is recovering in hospital.
Boris and Sofia Gurman
The couple were identified by Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese as individuals seen in video footage confronting one of the attackers. The footage showed Boris Gurman tackling and disarming a gunman before he was fatally shot. The Sydney Morning Herald reported that the couple were Russian-Jewish, citing a family statement.
“In recent days, we have become aware of footage showing Boris, with Sofia by his side, courageously attempting to disarm an attacker to protect others,” the statement said. “While nothing can lessen the pain of losing Boris and Sofia, we feel immense pride in their bravery and selflessness.”
Edith Brutman
Brutman, 68, was remembered as a woman with a “heart of gold,” according to local media. She was attending the event with a friend, Tibor Weitzen, who was killed while trying to shield her.
“Our beloved Edith was a woman of integrity who chose humanity every day,” her family said in a statement to national broadcaster ABC.
Tibor Weitzen
Weitzen, 78, a great-grandfather and husband, was fatally wounded while shielding his wife, who survived, and family friend Edith Brutman. His former employer, engineering firm Knorr-Bremse, confirmed his death to Reuters. He retired in 2015 after 16 years with the company.
Reuven Morrison
Morrison, 62, was shot dead after attempting to stop the attack, his daughter Sheina Gutnick told CBS News.
“He jumped the moment the shooting started,” she said. “He was protecting his community. If there was one way for him to leave this earth, it would be fighting a terrorist.”
Rabbi Eli Schlanger
Schlanger, 41, an assistant rabbi at Chabad Bondi, died while protecting his family, according to a family friend. His wife was grazed by a bullet, and the couple’s newborn remains hospitalized after being struck by shrapnel.
British-born Schlanger had lived in Sydney for 18 years and recently became a father for the fifth time. Friends described him as deeply compassionate and devoted to helping others.
Rabbi Yaakov Levitan
Rabbi Levitan, 39, a father of four, was described by Chabad as instrumental in many of Sydney’s Jewish institutions and in organizing the Hanukkah event. Born in Johannesburg, he was known for his humility and dedication to community service.
Alex Kleytman
Kleytman, 87, a Holocaust survivor, attended the event with his wife, children, and grandchildren. Originally from Ukraine, he and his wife later emigrated to Australia after surviving wartime hardship, including imprisonment in Siberia, according to JewishCare.
Matilda Britvan
Ten-year-old Matilda was a primary school student and former pupil at Harmony Russian School of Sydney. Her teacher described her as “bright, joyful, and spirited,” and a fundraiser was launched to support her family.
Marika Pogany
The death of Pogany, a Slovak national, was confirmed by Slovak President Peter Pellegrini. Former president Zuzana Čaputová described her as a close friend, saying Bondi Beach had been her refuge. “Marika was an exceptional woman who lived life to the fullest,” she wrote.
Peter Meagher
Meagher, a retired police detective and longtime rugby volunteer, was working as a freelance photographer at the event when he was killed. Randwick Rugby Club described him as a beloved figure and a pillar of the community.
Dan Elkayam
French national Dan Elkayam, 27, was confirmed among the dead by French President Emmanuel Macron.
