Several former Senate presidents have called on incumbent senators to swiftly resolve the ongoing leadership crisis in the Senate, urging them to uphold the institution's integrity and prioritize pressing national concerns over internal disputes.
In a joint statement, the former Senate leaders said they were speaking out of a "shared moral duty" to the institution they once headed, stressing that the Senate's credibility and stability must remain paramount.
"We, former Presidents of the Senate of the Republic of the Philippines, speak at this difficult moment out of our shared moral duty to the institution we once had the honor to lead," the statement read.
The former Senate presidents emphasized that the role of a Senate president is not to hold on to power but to leave the institution stronger and more firmly anchored in the rule of law.
"Those of us who once held the gavel know that the highest duty of a Senate President is not to cling to office but to leave the institution stronger, more respected, and more firmly bound to the rule of law than when he or she found it," they said.
The statement comes amid tensions in the Senate following recent leadership changes and disputes among lawmakers over the chamber's direction and procedures.
The former Senate leaders called on senators from all political blocs and affiliations to tone down public exchanges that could undermine confidence in the institution.
They urged lawmakers to settle their disagreements through official proceedings and proper forums where debates and decisions can be openly scrutinized by the public.
The former Senate presidents also appealed to senators to focus on urgent national concerns, including the economy, food and energy security, and the administration of justice.
"We urge all members of the chamber to resolve this crisis swiftly, within the bounds of the Constitution, the rules, and long-standing practice," they said.
They warned that prolonged instability in the Senate could further erode public trust in government institutions at a time when the country is facing economic challenges and security concerns.
"The country cannot afford an unstable Senate at a time of mounting economic pressures, security threats, and growing public distrust in institutions," the statement added.
