DUBAI (Reuters) - Around $24 billion in Iranian funds frozen overseas must be released under a memorandum of understanding currently being negotiated with the United States, a source close to Iran’s negotiating team said, according to a report by Iran’s Tasnim news agency on Tuesday.
The report clarified that the statement came from a source familiar with the negotiations, not from an official negotiator.
According to the same report, Iran’s top negotiator, Mohammad Baqr Qalibaf, traveled to Qatar in an effort to reach an agreement on a mechanism for implementing the release of the frozen assets.
No additional details on the timeline or specific conditions of the proposed arrangement were immediately provided. -Reporting by Jana Choukeir and Elwely Elwelly; Editing by Kevin Liffey/Reuters
