BASEBALL: Cards edge Mets thanks to Masyn Winn's walk-off bloop in 11th

Masyn Winn lifted the St. Louis Cardinals to a 2-1 extra-inning win with a walk-off RBI single in the 11th, sealing the series victory over the New York Mets. The Mets squandered a bases-loaded chance earlier in the inning and went hitless in 11 at-bats with runners in scoring position.

St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Masyn Winn delivered a walk-off bloop RBI single in the 11th inning Wednesday, giving the Cardinals a 2-1 win over the New York Mets in the rubber game of their three-game series.

The Mets squandered a bases-loaded, one-out opportunity in the top of the 11th. In the bottom half, Tobias Myers (0-1) opened by intentionally walking Ivan Herrera. He then induced Alec Burleson to hit into a double play before Winn’s fly ball dropped just beyond diving right fielder Carson Benge, allowing automatic runner JJ Wetherholt to score the game-winning run.

Gordon Graceffo (1-0) earned the victory after securing the final two outs of the extra frame. Graceffo, who relieved Chris Roycroft, got Brett Baty to hit a grounder that forced Jared Young at home, then retired Marcus Semien on a fly to right field.

Earlier, Nolan Gorman had an RBI single in the sixth for the Cardinals, who have now won their first two series of the season. Juan Soto homered in the top of the sixth for the Mets, who went 0-for-11 with runners in scoring position and dropped to 1-2 in extra-inning games this year. New York has scored just 12 runs in five games since an 11-7 Opening Day win over the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Cardinals starter Matthew Liberatore allowed one run on three hits and one walk while striking out two across six innings. Mets starter Freddy Peralta gave up one run on three hits and two walks with seven strikeouts over 5 1/3 innings.

Liberatore retired the first 14 batters he faced before Mark Vientos doubled, while Peralta allowed only two hits and one runner in scoring position before both teams broke through in the sixth. Soto’s homer came off the right field foul pole just two pitches after Francisco Lindor was picked off at first by Liberatore. In the bottom half, Peralta allowed a leadoff single to Wetherholt, walked Herrera, and struck out Burleson before Huascar Brazoban came in to induce Winn’s pop out and then give up Gorman’s RBI single.

The Cardinals continue their strong start, while the Mets look to find their rhythm after a slow offensive stretch.
