Victor Robles' infield single brought home the deciding run with one out in the 10th inning as the Seattle Mariners defeated the visiting Arizona Diamondbacks 3-2 on Sunday afternoon, completing a sweep of the three-game interleague series.
Cole Young and Dominic Canzone hit solo homers for the American League West-leading Mariners, who extended their season-high winning streak to six games.
Luis Castillo (2-5) pitched five innings of two-hit relief to earn the victory.
With automatic runner Randy Arozarena starting at second base in the 10th, Diamondbacks reliever Jonathan Loáisiga (1-2) intentionally walked Luke Raley. Young then dropped down a sacrifice bunt to move the runners to second and third. Robles followed with a sharp grounder up the middle; shortstop Geraldo Perdomo smothered it with a diving attempt but bobbled the ball, leaving him unable to make a play and allowing Arozarena to score the game-winner.
The Mariners opened the scoring in the second inning when Young led off by pulling a fastball just inside the right-field foul pole. Seattle threatened to break the game open as Jhonny Pereda and Colt Emerson singled and J.P. Crawford walked to load the bases with one out. However, Julio Rodríguez hit a liner to center fielder Ryan Waldschmidt, who easily threw out Pereda—a slow-footed catcher—at the plate for an inning-ending double play.
Mariners starter Bryce Miller turned in a strong performance, allowing just one hit—a one-out single by Ildemaro Vargas in the second—alongside one walk and six strikeouts over five scoreless frames. Despite throwing only 71 pitches, he was pulled early as part of a pre-planned piggyback tandem with Castillo.
The strategy backfired immediately as the Diamondbacks tied the game in the sixth. Ketel Marte drew a one-out walk and advanced to third on Corbin Carroll's double to center. While Marte was later thrown out at the plate by shortstop Crawford on a grounder by Perdomo, Carroll advanced to third on the play and subsequently scored on a wild pitch.
Canzone put the Mariners back in front in the bottom of the frame, leading off with a blast that grazed the inside of the right-field foul pole.
Arizona manufactured the tying run in the eighth after pinch-hitter Gabriel Moreno led off with a bloop single down the right-field line. Tim Tawa followed with a sacrifice bunt down the first-base line, where Josh Naylor's errant throw to second sailed into center field, putting runners on second and third. Marte then drove in Moreno with a sacrifice fly to left, knotting the score at 2-2.
After Carroll grounded out, Perdomo lined a shot that appeared destined for right field, but second baseman Young made a spectacular leaping catch to keep the score tied and set up the extra-inning dramatics. -Field Level Media/Reuters
