George Springer belted a grand slam in the fourth inning to highlight his three-hit performance, fueling the Toronto Blue Jays to an 11-0 romp over a New York Yankees split squad on Thursday.
Daulton Varsho launched a solo home run in the first inning and joined Springer in collecting three of the Blue Jays’ 14 hits. Andres Gimenez added a two-run shot in the fifth, while Cody Ponce allowed just one hit and struck out five in 5 2/3 innings. For the Yankees, Amed Rosario collected two of the team’s three hits.
Yankees (ss) 5, Orioles (ss) 4
Garrett Martin belted a solo homer in the ninth inning, and Roderick Arias scored on a game-ending sacrifice fly as a New York split squad rallied past a Baltimore split squad in Tampa.
Giancarlo Stanton contributed a solo home run and a sacrifice fly for the Yankees. Meanwhile, Coby Mayo hit a two-run homer, RJ Austin ripped an RBI double, and Adley Rutschman had a run-scoring single for the Orioles.
Phillies 8, Rays 2
Otto Kemp launched a three-run homer as Philadelphia slugged three homers en route to cruising past Tampa Bay in Clearwater, Fla. Bryson Stott belted a two-run shot for his third homer of the spring, while Adolis Garcia also went deep for the Phillies. For the Rays, Ryan Vilade and Alfonzo Martinez each hit a solo homer in the fifth inning.
Cardinals 5, Nationals 1
Dakota Harris had a two-run single in the third inning and later scored on Trey Paige’s two-run homer in the eighth, propelling St. Louis past Washington in Jupiter, Fla. Nelson Velazquez had an RBI single in the first inning and, along with Alec Burleson, accounted for two of the Cardinals’ 10 hits. Brady House collected two hits, and Luis Garcia Jr. scored on a groundout in the second inning for the Nationals.
Orioles (ss) 5, Pirates 2
Samuel Basallo continued his hot spring, going 3-for-3 with two home runs and three RBIs to lead a Baltimore split squad to victory over visiting Pittsburgh in Sarasota, Fla. Basallo, batting .375 with three homers and 10 RBIs, drilled a solo shot in the first inning and a two-run blast in the third to give the Orioles a 5-0 lead. Trevor Rogers scattered seven hits over 5 1/3 innings, allowing two runs while striking out seven and walking none. Bryan Reynolds went 2-for-3 with an RBI single for the Pirates, while former Oriole Ryan O’Hearn drove in Pittsburgh’s other run.
Red Sox 4, Twins 2
Starter Brayan Bello delivered six scoreless innings of three-hit ball, striking out seven with no walks, to guide Boston over visiting Minnesota in Fort Myers, Fla. Ceddanne Rafaela added a two-run single, Willson Contreras an RBI double, and Trevor Story an RBI single to pace the Red Sox offense. Boston’s defense committed four errors, two of which resulted in Minnesota’s late runs, but Tayron Guerrero recorded the final out for his fourth save. Kody Clemens had two hits for the Twins.
Mets 6, Astros 2
Backed by early run support, Kodai Senga blanked host Houston for four innings, allowing three hits while fanning four, as New York prevailed in West Palm Beach, Fla. Luis Robert Jr. went 2-for-4 with two RBIs on a double that gave the Mets a 5-0 lead in the fifth. Fellow newcomer Bo Bichette went 2-for-2 and scored twice, while Marcus Semien added two RBIs. Astros starter Peter Lambert allowed three runs in 3 1/3 innings, and reliever Ryan Weiss gave up three runs in just two-thirds of an inning. Yordan Alvarez and Brice Matthews each notched two hits, including an RBI single apiece.
