Ty France broke a seventh-inning tie with a two-run, pinch-hit triple, and Xander Bogaerts added a two-run homer in the eighth as the San Diego Padres captured a 5-1 victory over the San Francisco Giants on Wednesday, securing the road series win.
After taking over from opener Bradgley Rodriguez, Matt Waldron (1-1) delivered five innings of one-run pitching for his first win of the season, helping San Diego bounce back after Monday’s series-opening loss.
The game remained tied after solo homers from the Padres' Gavin Sheets (fifth of the season) and the Giants' Rafael Devers (third of the season). In the seventh, the Padres capitalized on a throwing error by San Francisco third baseman Matt Chapman to take the lead. Giants reliever Keaton Winn walked Ramon Laureano and got two outs, but France’s flyball down the right-field line, just out of reach of a diving Jesus Rodriguez, scored Fernando Tatis Jr. and Laureano. It was France’s second triple of the season, adding to only four in his first seven major-league campaigns.
Bogaerts then extended the lead with a two-run homer in the eighth, his second of the series and seventh of the season, following a walk to Manny Machado by Ryan Walker.
Waldron allowed only Devers’ homer and one other hit over five innings, striking out seven and walking none. Adrian Morejon and Mason Miller combined for six strikeouts in the final three innings, giving up just one hit.
Nick Castellanos contributed two hits for the Padres, who out-hit the Giants 6-3. For San Francisco, Rodriguez went 2-for-3 with two singles.
Giants starter Adrian Houser (0-4) gave up two runs (one earned) on three hits in six innings, walking one and striking out three. The Giants have now lost eight of their last nine games.
