The Charlotte Hornets and Orlando Magic will square off Friday night in a crucial play-in game to determine the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. The winner will earn the eighth seed and face the top-seeded Detroit Pistons in the first round of the playoffs, starting Sunday night.
For the Hornets, securing a win and advancing to the postseason would mark a major milestone, making the 2025-26 season one of the most successful in recent franchise history. The team, finishing ninth in the East with a 44-38 record, advanced to this pivotal game following a dramatic 127-126 overtime win over the Miami Heat. LaMelo Ball’s game-winning layup with 4.7 seconds left in overtime sealed the victory for Charlotte, sending them into the final round of the play-in tournament.
The Magic, who finished eighth in the East with a 45-37 record, are coming off a disappointing 109-97 loss to the Philadelphia 76ers, which dropped them into the elimination game. Despite the loss, Orlando remains optimistic heading into the crucial matchup on Friday, hoping to bounce back and secure a playoff berth.
While the Hornets’ win over Miami showcased their resilience, it was not without controversy. The game included a buzzer-beating 3-pointer from Coby White to force overtime, and a game-ending block by Miles Bridges on a layup attempt from Davion Mitchell. However, the night was also marked by LaMelo Ball's actions: after being fined for a flagrant foul earlier in the game, he was fined again for a profanity-laced remark during a live interview.
Despite the ups and downs, Hornets’ head coach Charles Lee emphasized the importance of sticking together. "At the end of the day, execution is not always going to be perfect," Lee said. "But I think these guys find a way to stick with it and not give in when things aren't going well."
On the other hand, the Magic have had a more turbulent season than expected. Though they added Desmond Bane to their roster and saw the return of key players like Paolo Banchero and Jalen Suggs, Orlando only improved by four games over last season. After a tough loss to the Boston Celtics in the regular season finale, the Magic are looking to rebound with one last opportunity to make the playoffs.
"We live with the result and come out Friday in front of the home crowd and go get a win," Banchero said. "That's all you can do. Shots didn’t fall, but you can’t be discouraged. We’ve got another game coming up real soon."
The stakes are high, and both teams will be fighting for the chance to continue their playoff journey. -Field Level Media/Reuters
