Daniss Jenkins scored 26 points, dished out eight assists, and grabbed five rebounds to lead the host Detroit Pistons to a 113-108 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves on Thursday night.
Jalen Duren added 22 points and 14 rebounds for the Pistons (56-21), who moved one step closer to clinching the Eastern Conference's top seed. Duncan Robinson contributed 15 points, while Kevin Huerter added 12 off the bench. Ausar Thompson nearly recorded a triple-double with seven points, nine rebounds, nine assists, and three blocks.
Detroit defeated Minnesota for the second time in less than a week, having previously won 109-87 on the Timberwolves’ home court last Saturday.
For Minnesota (46-30), Julius Randle led with 27 points, six rebounds, and six assists. Naz Reid scored 19 points with six boards, while Ayo Dosunmu also had 19 points, five rebounds, and four assists. Mike Conley added 14 points and Terrence Shannon Jr. chipped in 10.
The Pistons shot 47.7% from the field and made 10 of 23 three-point attempts. The Timberwolves finished at 44.2% and made 13 of 42 from beyond the arc.
Both teams were missing key players. Detroit’s Cade Cunningham remained sidelined while recovering from a collapsed lung. The Pistons have gone 7-2 since his injury. Minnesota’s Anthony Edwards missed the game due to a right knee injury and illness. The Timberwolves were also playing the first game of a back-to-back.
Pistons forward Tobias Harris left the game with a left knee injury after colliding with Minnesota’s Rudy Gobert in the first half and did not return.
Detroit outscored Minnesota 34-28 in the fourth quarter. Trailing 89-85 with 8:18 left, the Pistons went on an 18-3 run, sparked by Jenkins’ three-point play. Thompson scored in the lane to give Detroit a lead it would not relinquish.
Ronald Holland II and Thompson added dunks as the lead extended to 96-89, followed by Duren’s putback dunk for a 98-90 advantage. Robinson then drained a 3-pointer from Jenkins’ feed to push the lead to double digits and cap the run.
The Timberwolves closed the gap to three points in the final minute, but Jenkins sealed the win with two free throws with 14.1 seconds remaining.
