With their season hanging in the balance, Houston Rockets star forward Kevin Durant will miss Game 4 of their Western Conference playoff series against the visiting Los Angeles Lakers on Sunday night due to an ankle injury.
Durant was initially listed as questionable by Houston but was downgraded to out roughly five hours before tipoff. The Rockets now trail the Lakers 3-0 in the best-of-seven series and face elimination at home.
According to an ESPN report, Durant is dealing with a bone bruise in his sprained ankle. The injury typically sidelines players for two to three weeks, casting serious doubt on any potential return during the series.
The 16-time All-Star has played in only one game in the matchup so far. In Game 2, he logged 41 minutes and finished with 23 points on 7-of-12 shooting, including 1-of-4 from three-point range. Despite his effort, Houston fell 101-94.
The Rockets have struggled throughout the series, falling behind 0-3 against a Lakers team that has also been d
ealing with significant injuries. As a team, Houston has shot just 28.7% from beyond the arc across the first three games.
Los Angeles also received a late injury update, with guard Austin Reaves (left oblique strain) downgraded from questionable to out less than an hour before tipoff.
The Lakers have been without their top two scorers in the series, Luka Doncic (left hamstring strain) and Reaves, yet are on the verge of a sweep. Reaves averaged 23.3 points, 5.5 assists, 4.7 rebounds, and 1.1 steals during the regular season while shooting 36% from three-point range.
Despite those absences, Los Angeles has been powered by strong performances from LeBron James (25.3 points per game), Luke Kennard (21.3), and Marcus Smart (20.3), who have shouldered the offensive load through the first three playoff wins.
