NCAA: Duke early title favorite at 2027 Final Four in Detroit

INDIANAPOLIS – The road to the 2027 Final Four in Detroit promises surprises, with transfer and freshman-heavy rosters shaking up college basketball’s landscape.

Michigan has reloaded with key transfers Yaxel Lendeborg (UAB), Elliot Cadeau (North Carolina), Morez Johnson Jr. (Illinois), and Aday Mara (UCLA), who helped the Wolverines capture their second national title. The program also brought in Nimari Burnett (Alabama, Texas Tech) and Roddy Gayle Jr. (Ohio State), both of whom played major roles in Michigan’s 2025–26 championship run.

Wolverines guard Will Tschetter even went the extra mile, arranging a shoot-around at Michigan Stadium to prepare for the massive Final Four backdrops—a move some teammates initially thought was “crazy.” If Michigan returns to the 2027 Final Four, they could get additional practice shots just 42 minutes away in Detroit.

Early oddsmakers’ projections favor Duke (+700 at FanDuel), with Michigan trailing closely at +800. Lendeborg, a graduate student, adds experience to a team already accustomed to competing at the highest level. Head coach Dusty May has now reached a Final Four with two programs, including Florida Atlantic.

The transfer portal continues to reshape college basketball, creating volatility in team expectations and betting odds. Duke will lose National Player of the Year Cam Boozer to the NBA draft but brings in a strong recruiting class one year after Cooper Flagg led the Blue Devils to the Final Four.

Arizona faces uncertainty with top freshmen Koa Peat and Brayden Burries possibly departing, while replacing Big 12 Player of the Year Jaden Bradley will not be easy. Oddsmakers place the Wildcats third for the 2027 title at +1200, followed by 2025 champion Florida (+1300) and 2025 runner-up Houston (+1400).

Michigan State coach Tom Izzo expects his roster to remain largely intact, giving the Spartans +1500 odds, just ahead of UConn and Kansas (+1600).

Michigan’s approach reflects the changing nature of roster-building in college basketball. “We’re going to bring in really good guys, high achievers who want to do it our way,” May said.

He added, “When the Oklahoma City Thunder won last year, I admired how they played together, no matter the roster changes. That’s the model we want for Michigan—players who care about each other, play the right way, and represent their school, their families, and their city.”

Michigan is betting that this strategy of combining experience, talent, and teamwork can put them back in Final Four contention next April.
