Fernando Mendoza Selected First Overall by Las Vegas Raiders in NFL Draft
Fernando Mendoza, the Indiana quarterback who made history by winning the Heisman Trophy and leading the Hoosiers to an undefeated 16-0 record and a national championship last season, expressed his excitement after being selected first overall in the 2026 NFL Draft by the Las Vegas Raiders.
Mendoza, who is widely regarded as one of the most promising quarterbacks in recent years, shared his enthusiasm for taking the next step in his career. "College was fantastic, and I'm so blessed to have had that career, but now I step into the great game in the NFL," Mendoza said. "I look forward to earning it and proving it every day."
Raiders Hope to Rebuild with Mendoza’s Talent
The Raiders are counting on Mendoza’s accuracy, decision-making, and resilience to help revitalize one of the league’s most iconic franchises. After a disappointing 3-14 season, in which the team struggled offensively with a league-low 241 points, the Raiders are eager for a fresh start. Mendoza’s selection marks a new chapter for the team, who has not won a playoff game since before Mendoza was born.
Raiders General Manager John Spytek emphasized that the decision to draft Mendoza was the result of a thorough evaluation process, not just an easy choice. “He’s a hard-working, driven, and extremely smart young man,” Spytek said, praising Mendoza’s character and potential.
Mendoza will be learning under the mentorship of Raiders minority owner and seven-time Super Bowl champion, Tom Brady. He will also compete in the quarterback room with veteran Kirk Cousins and 2023 draft pick Aidan O'Connell.
Aiming to Become the Franchise Quarterback
As the Raiders look to find their long-term quarterback solution, Mendoza is expected to play a crucial role. "I expect fans to see a guy who comes out and gives his best to Raider Nation," Spytek said. "He’s going to compete his tail off with Kirk and Aidan. As we’ve said, this is a meritocracy in the NFL. The best guy will play. But we expect him to come in ready to roll—that’s the kind of person he is."
Mendoza had an impressive college career, completing 71.5% of his passes last season, throwing for 2,980 yards, and accounting for 39 total touchdowns. His stellar performance has left fans and analysts alike eager to see how he translates his talents to the professional level.
Upon hearing his name called by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, Mendoza shared a heartfelt moment with his mother, flashing a bright smile as he donned a Raiders cap. "What a great organization, what a great legacy," Mendoza said, referencing the Raiders' history of five Super Bowl appearances and three victories. "There are so many great teammates, coaches, and owners I’m looking forward to talking to. I’m ecstatic for the opportunity."
With a bright future ahead, Mendoza’s journey with the Raiders is just beginning, and the franchise’s hopes for a return to glory now rest on his shoulders.
