NHL: Bruins return home for Game 3 after flipping Sabres' home-ice advantage
The Boston Bruins seized home-ice advantage with a 4-2 win over the Buffalo Sabres in Game 2 of their Eastern Conference series, highlighted by Viktor Arvidsson’s two-goal performance and strong goaltending from Jeremy Swayman. The Sabres now face a critical Game 3 as they work to address their goaltending and power-play struggles.

The Boston Bruins have seized home-ice advantage from the Buffalo Sabres in their Eastern Conference first-round series following a decisive 4-2 win on Tuesday night. The victory sets up a highly anticipated Game 3 in Boston on Thursday, with both teams locked in an intense playoff battle.
“It felt like it was nasty from the first shift, from the first game,” said Bruins defenseman Nikita Zadorov after Tuesday's physical clash, which saw a combined 94 penalty minutes, including 72 in the third period alone. “It’s playoff emotions and intensity. It’s always going to be up there.”
Although Bruins head coach Marco Sturm wasn’t entirely displeased with his team’s Game 1 performance, especially given Buffalo’s third-period rally for a 4-3 win, he praised his squad’s bounce-back effort in Game 2. With a strong performance from goaltender Jeremy Swayman, who has a .932 save percentage through two games, Boston emerged victorious.
Viktor Arvidsson played a pivotal role, scoring two goals, including the opening goal of a three-goal second period that put the Bruins ahead for good. Morgan Geekie and Arvidsson’s linemate Pavel Zacha also contributed to the scoring.
“We did a lot of good things. We played our style of hockey, I would say definitely more than Game 1,” said Sturm. “Overall, it was a good game, but at the end of the day, it was only one game. We’re gonna regroup, fly home and try to do the same thing at home.”
For the second-line trio of former Sabre Casey Mittelstadt, Zacha, and Arvidsson, the strong showing came after a challenge from Sturm to get back to their hard-nosed style of play. And they responded. “They just needed a poke, that’s all,” said Sturm. “Knowing ‘Arvy’ very well, he’s a guy who takes it very seriously and takes it to heart. I knew he was going to have a big night.”
As the series shifts back to Boston, the Bruins will aim to replicate their strong performance, while the Sabres face questions—especially in goal. Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen was pulled in favor of Alex Lyon after allowing four goals on just 20 shots. Lyon, who hadn’t played since April 4, entered in the second period.
"Just felt that there may be a chance we’re going to need (Lyon)," said Sabres coach Lindy Ruff. "May play him next game, but just get him a period because he hasn’t played in a while."
Buffalo’s struggles weren’t just limited to goaltending. Despite outshooting the Bruins 35-27, the Sabres’ power play remained ineffective, going 0-for-5 on the night and falling to 0-for-31 over the last nine games.
“I think we’ll have to tweak some things,” said Ruff. “I think if you look at the last power play, we went with a little bit of a different look. We had a scheme that we thought maybe would work a little bit better. I like the amount of shots we generated.”
Buffalo did make things interesting late in the game, with defenseman Bowen Byram and forward Peyton Krebs scoring back-to-back goals to cut the Bruins’ lead to 4-2 with 4:52 left in regulation. But despite the late push, the Sabres couldn't claw back.
With the series now tied at 1-1, both teams are looking ahead to Game 3, where the stakes will be even higher as the Bruins aim to maintain their home-ice advantage. -Field Level Media/Reuters
