The Tampa Bay Lightning kicked off their final two-game homestand with a thrilling 4-3 overtime win over the Detroit Red Wings on Monday night, marking their 50th victory of the season.
Nikita Kucherov delivered the game-winning goal just 27 seconds into overtime after goaltender Andrei Vasilevskiy made a crucial save on Alex DeBrincat at the start of the extra frame. Brayden Point then assisted on Kucherov's 44th goal of the season, sending the Lightning to their fourth win in their last seven games (4-3-0).
Heading into the game, the Lightning (50-25-6, 106 points) were in third place, trailing the Buffalo Sabres and the idle Montreal Canadiens by points. Despite a strong start, they nearly squandered a 3-1 third-period lead. Conor Geekie, Erik Cernak, and Jake Guentzel also scored for Tampa Bay, who improved to 26-13-1 on home ice. Kucherov added an assist to his game-winning tally.
For the Red Wings (41-30-10, 92 points), DeBrincat scored his 41st goal of the season, while David Perron and Marco Kasper added to the scoreboard. Patrick Kane earned his 1,400th career point with an assist, but Detroit’s recent struggles continued as they dropped to 1-3-2 in their last six games. Goalie Cam Talbot stopped 18 shots in the loss.
The game started with Detroit taking the lead at 5:31 in the first period, as Ben Chiarot's shot was misjudged by Vasilevskiy, leading to a rebound that was quickly converted by Perron for his 13th goal. Detroit nearly extended their lead at 15:30 when Simon Edvinsson found the net, but the goal was overturned after the Lightning challenged for goaltender interference, negating Kane’s milestone point.
The Lightning responded later in the first period, as Geekie scored his first goal of the season after a breakaway at 17:05, cutting Detroit's lead to 2-1. Tampa Bay then capitalized in the second period, with Cernak and Guentzel scoring within 2:10 of each other to give the Lightning a 3-1 lead heading into the final frame.
Detroit rallied in the third, with Kasper scoring his ninth goal at 2:56 to narrow the gap. DeBrincat followed suit, tying the game on a pass from Kane, which led to an intense overtime period where Kucherov sealed the win.
With the victory, the Lightning solidified their playoff hopes and will look to continue their momentum in the final stretch of the season.
