The New York Islanders secured a much-needed two points with a 5-3 victory over the visiting Toronto Maple Leafs in their first game under new head coach Peter DeBoer.

The win improved the Islanders’ record to 43-31-5 (91 points), keeping them firmly in the Eastern Conference playoff race. They are now just one point behind the Philadelphia Flyers for third place in the Metropolitan Division and three points behind the Ottawa Senators for the second wild-card spot. The Islanders will host Ottawa on Saturday in a crucial matchup.

Rookie defenseman Matthew Schaefer played a starring role, scoring twice and tying the NHL record for most goals by a rookie defenseman with 23 on the season. His timely goal in the second period restored New York’s lead after Toronto had erased a two-goal deficit to level the game.

Calum Ritchie contributed a strong multi-point performance, while Tony DeAngelo also made an impact in his return from a six-game injury absence, helping stabilize the Islanders’ offensive push from the blue line.

DeBoer’s debut behind the bench started with immediate energy. Ritchie set up an early scoring chance after drawing a delayed penalty, feeding the puck through the slot to Brayden Schenn, who finished the play just 2:08 into the game to open the scoring. Moments later, Jean-Gabriel Pageau doubled the lead by burying a rebound past Toronto netminder Artur Akhtyamov.

The Maple Leafs responded quickly. Steven Lorentz cut the deficit to 2-1 just 16 seconds later after a scramble in front of the net, with Islanders defenseman Carson Soucy inadvertently colliding with goaltender Ilya Sorokin on the play, leaving Lorentz with an open look to score.

Despite managing only 16 shots in their previous outing against the Carolina Hurricanes, New York came out far more aggressive, firing 24 shots in the opening period alone.

Toronto continued to push back early in the second period. Easton Cowan tied the game 2-2 on the power play, capitalizing on space in the high slot and beating Sorokin with a sharp finish just under two minutes into the frame. Moments later, rookie Luke Haymes nearly gave the Maple Leafs the lead, ringing a shot off the post in his NHL debut.

However, Schaefer once again swung momentum back to New York later in the period. He skated into the faceoff circle and fired a precise shot under Akhtyamov to reclaim the lead for the Islanders, marking his second goal of the night and reinforcing his historic rookie campaign.

The Islanders extended their advantage on the power play when Emil Heineman converted a one-timer, giving New York a 4-2 cushion heading into the third period. Ritchie then sealed the game early in the final frame, scoring on a two-man advantage to make it 5-2.

Toronto added a late consolation goal through Morgan Rielly with about six minutes remaining. Haymes picked up his first career NHL point on the play, an encouraging moment in an otherwise difficult night for the visitors.

Akhtyamov, making his first NHL start, faced heavy pressure throughout and finished with 39 saves on 44 shots. At the other end, Sorokin stopped 13 of 16 shots for New York.

The victory snapped the Islanders’ four-game losing streak and marked an encouraging start to the DeBoer era. New York has now won eight of its last 10 meetings against Toronto, reinforcing its recent dominance in the matchup as the playoff race tightens down the stretch. -Field Level Media/Reuters
