MILAN – Canada's "Captain Clutch" Marie-Philip Poulin set a new milestone in Olympic women's hockey by breaking the all-time goal-scoring record with her 19th goal—and added a 20th just minutes later—during the semi-final against Switzerland on Monday.
The five-time Olympian scored with a slap shot that bounced off the ice and went over Swiss goalie Andrea Braendli's pad, giving Canada a 1-0 lead in the second period at Santagiulia Arena. The goal surpassed fellow Canadian Hayley Wickenheiser's record.
Poulin quickly added another goal less than seven minutes later, diving toward the net to extend her team's lead.
The future Hall of Famer had missed Canada’s last two group-stage games due to a knee injury but returned for the 5-1 quarter-final win over Germany on Saturday, where she tied Wickenheiser’s record with her first goal at Milano Cortina.
As defending champions, Canada is aiming for a sixth Olympic gold in women’s hockey. -Reporting by Amy Tennery and Trevor Stynes in Milan; Editing by Ken Ferris/Reuters
