PREDAZZO, Italy – The opening days of the Milano Cortina Olympics brought disappointment for Slovenia’s ski jumping stars, Nika and Domen Prevc, as well as their country, which has a rich history in the sport. Both will now look to Tuesday’s mixed team event for a chance at redemption.
Nika Prevc, considered a favorite for the normal hill event, earned a silver medal behind Norway’s Anne Odine Stroem in the first ski jumping competition of the Games.
Her older brother Domen faced an even bigger surprise, finishing sixth in the normal hill event – one of the most unexpected results of the Olympics so far.
The Prevc siblings are now determined to turn things around and aim for gold together.
“The Olympics are where you want to show your best, and I am going to give everything I have,” said Nika, 20, after the normal hill competition on Saturday, acknowledging her frustration at not meeting expectations.
Domen also focused on the future, saying, “I just want to perform even better tomorrow,” after his normal hill performance.
Despite their slow start, Slovenia remains one of the favorites in the mixed team event, which features two men and two women competing on the normal hill. -Reporting by Tommy Lund and Liz Hampton in Predazzo, Italy; Editing by Andrew Cawthorne/Reuters
