Los Angeles Rams coach Sean McVay is open to the idea of reuniting with quarterback Kirk Cousins, potentially as a backup behind reigning MVP Matthew Stafford.

The Rams are also considering re-signing Jimmy Garoppolo, who has served as the team’s backup for the past two seasons. Garoppolo is currently a free agent and could sign elsewhere, which may pave the way for a Cousins-McVay reunion.

McVay was the offensive coordinator in Washington when Cousins became the starting quarterback in 2015. The two spent five seasons together. Cousins, now back on the market, was released by the Atlanta Falcons on March 11, two years into the four-year, $180 million contract he signed with the team.

“Kirk is as influential as anybody in helping me get to L.A. in the first place,” McVay said Monday on PFT Live during the league meetings in Phoenix. “I know he’s got some other options and some other suitors, but Jimmy and Kirk are guys that I would love to be able to have back with us.”

Cousins, a four-time Pro Bowler, will turn 38 in August. He struggled late in his first season with the Falcons, throwing 18 touchdowns to 16 interceptions and eventually losing the starting job to rookie Michael Penix Jr. However, he showed improvement when he stepped in for Penix after the rookie’s season-ending injury, throwing for 1,721 yards, 10 touchdowns, and five interceptions in eight starts.

Over 14 NFL seasons, Cousins has completed 66.7% of his passes for 44,700 yards, 298 touchdowns, and 131 interceptions.

McVay also confirmed Monday that the Rams had considered trading wide receiver Davante Adams but ultimately decided against it.

Adams signed a two-year contract with the Rams in 2025 and recorded 60 receptions, 789 yards, and a league-leading 14 touchdowns in 14 games last season. His $6 million roster bonus became fully guaranteed two weeks ago, ending any trade discussions.

“If we felt like it was best for our team, we would have done that,” McVay said of the six-time Pro Bowler and three-time All-Pro. “But we didn’t think it was best for our team.”
