Salah’s Omission from Liverpool’s Inter Clash Linked to His Actions, Says Alisson Becker. Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah’s absence from Tuesday’s Champions League match against Inter Milan stems from his reaction to being left out of the squad, according to teammate Alisson Becker.
Salah, 33, was excluded from the 19-man squad for the Inter clash after he expressed frustration in an interview following Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Leeds United, saying he felt he had been “thrown under the bus” by the club.
“Salah not being available is just a consequence of what he did and he is smart enough to know that. I didn’t speak to Mo about that,” the Brazilian goalkeeper told reporters. “We share good moments, happy moments, so that creates a bond. We will have a conversation, but that is personal.”
Salah, who has scored 250 goals and won two Premier League titles along with a Champions League during his eight years at Liverpool, has recently seen limited playing time. He was left on the bench during last month’s 2-0 win at West Ham United, came on as a substitute in the draw against Sunderland, and was again an unused substitute at Leeds.
Liverpool manager Arne Slot said he was unsure if Salah had played his last game for the club. Becker, however, expressed hope for the Egyptian forward’s return.
“I hope he plays again for the club. That’s a personal situation between Mo and the club,” Becker said. “We, as his teammates and friends, hope the best for him, but as Liverpool FC players we also want the best for the club. We want a win-win situation for everyone.”
This season, Salah has scored just five goals and appeared in 19 matches across all competitions. He had suggested that he was being made a scapegoat for Liverpool’s slow start, with the Premier League side currently sitting 10th in the table, 10 points behind leaders Arsenal after 15 games. -Suramya Kaushik in Bengaluru/Reuters
