SOCCER: Atletico hit back to hold Arsenal in cagey Champions League semi-final first leg

Atletico Madrid and Arsenal shared a tense 1-1 draw in the Champions League semi-final first leg after Julian Alvarez’s penalty cancelled out Viktor Gyokeres’s first-half opener. MADRID – Atlético Madrid and Arsenal shared the spoils on Wednesday after Julian Alvarez’s second-half penalty canceled out Viktor Gyökeres’ first-half strike, as the two sides played out a 1-1 draw in a tightly contested Champions League semifinal first leg.

The match was cautious and tactical throughout, with Atlético controlling early possession but failing to create clear chances. Arsenal struck just before halftime in the 44th minute when Gyökeres was fouled in the box by David Hancko. The Sweden striker stepped up and calmly converted the penalty past Jan Oblak to give the visitors a 1-0 lead at the break.

Atlético responded in the 56th minute after VAR ruled that a Marcos Llorente shot had struck the arm of Ben White inside the area. Alvarez took responsibility and drilled his penalty into the top-left corner, beyond the reach of David Raya, to level the score.

The hosts came close to turning the game around when Antoine Griezmann struck the crossbar later in the second half. Arsenal thought they had a late chance to regain the lead after being awarded a penalty, but the decision was overturned following a VAR review.

The tie remains finely balanced heading into the second leg, with the winner set to face either Paris Saint-Germain or Bayern Munich in the final on May 30 in Budapest. PSG currently hold a 5-4 advantage after the first leg of their semifinal. -Reporting by Fernando Kallas. Additional reporting by Chalie Devereux; editing by Clare Fallon/Reuters
