MANCHESTER, England – The Premier League resumes this weekend after a break for international fixtures, with Arsenal looking to maintain their push for a first league title in over two decades. Their momentum was boosted by a 1-0 victory over Sporting in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final on Tuesday.
The win comes after a challenging fortnight in domestic competitions, during which Mikel Arteta’s side suffered their first back-to-back defeats of the season. Arsenal lost to rivals Manchester City in the League Cup final and were eliminated from the FA Cup quarter-finals by Championship side Southampton.
The recent setbacks raised familiar questions about Arsenal’s ability to handle pressure, but Tuesday’s victory demonstrated the squad’s resilience.
“We stick together as a group, we have so much more to come this season,” said Kai Havertz, who scored the lone goal against Sporting. “Seven weeks to go, we can win big titles, and we’re going to go for that.”
Arsenal lead the table by nine points over Manchester City, though City have a game in hand. The Gunners host Bournemouth on Saturday, knowing they cannot afford another slip as the season nears its conclusion, with seven league fixtures remaining.
City, meanwhile, have regained their form after months of inconsistency. Pep Guardiola’s side outplayed Arsenal to win the League Cup and thrashed reigning champions Liverpool 4-0 in the FA Cup quarter-finals. They travel to sixth-placed Chelsea on Sunday with confidence high, aiming to sustain their strong finish to the season.
Fifth-placed Liverpool host Fulham on Saturday in a match with Champions League implications. Liverpool are just a point ahead of sixth-placed Chelsea, and any dropped points could leave their European fate in the hands of rivals. Fulham sit ninth, five points behind the Reds.
Five Champions League Spots
England has been awarded a fifth spot in next season’s Champions League, thanks to Arsenal’s progress in Europe, slightly easing the battle for European qualification.
Struggling Tottenham Hotspur face Sunderland on Sunday. The London side is only one point above the relegation zone, and Roberto De Zerbi will oversee his first match in charge with seven games left to avoid the drop. Spurs last won a league game in late December and sit 17th with 30 points, while Sunderland are 11th, 13 points clear. A win could provide De Zerbi an early lift, while a loss risks plunging Spurs further into danger.
Manchester United round out the weekend fixtures with a Monday match against Leeds United. Under interim manager Michael Carrick, United have been in remarkable form since January, securing 23 points from a possible 30. Currently third in the table, a win would strengthen their hold on a top-five spot and bolster Carrick’s case for the permanent managerial role. Leeds are 15th.
With only weeks remaining in the Premier League season, every match carries weight—whether for the title, European qualification, or relegation survival.
