SOCCER: Calm after the storm for Simeone as Atletico bow out of Champions League

Atletico Madrid were knocked out of the Champions League semi-finals after a 2-1 aggregate defeat to Arsenal, with Diego Simeone praising his team’s effort but admitting they lacked the cutting edge. The loss also ended Antoine Griezmann’s hopes of a dream European farewell, as Arsenal’s defensive resilience proved decisive.

LONDON — Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone spent almost the entire second leg of his side’s Champions League semifinal defeat to Arsenal pacing his technical area, gesturing at his players, and reacting intensely to every moment of the match.

As Atletico’s hopes of reaching the final for the third time during his 15-year tenure faded late in their 1-0 loss at Emirates Stadium, emotions got the better of him. He was booked by the referee, not for the first time while wearing a suit.

However, the 56-year-old Argentine was composed afterward as he reflected on the 2-1 aggregate defeat, with his team ultimately unable to break down a disciplined Arsenal side.

“I feel calm, I feel peace. I think the team gave absolutely everything,” Simeone told reporters. “They took their big chance in the first half and they deserved it.”

Atletico struggled to break through an Arsenal defense that recorded its ninth clean sheet of the Champions League season. The Spanish side were left to regret missed opportunities in the first leg, which ended in a 1-1 draw in Madrid.

“In the first leg, we could have won it, but we were not clinical enough,” Simeone said. “We gave it all, and now we have to accept where we are. I’m proud of the team.”

Simeone also praised Arsenal, a team that has developed traits often associated with his own Atletico sides, including defensive discipline and resilience.

“I think Mikel Arteta has done an incredible job at Arsenal,” he said. “I’m really pleased for them. They deserve it.”

The defeat marked a heartbreaking end to Antoine Griezmann’s hopes of finishing his Champions League career with Atletico before his planned move to Orlando City in Major League Soccer.

“He has been an amazing player. We are sad not just for him but for all Atletico fans,” said goalkeeper Jan Oblak. “Everyone was aiming for this final, but we didn’t reach it. It’s a difficult moment.” -Reporting by Martyn Herman; Editing by Ken Ferris/Reuters
