New York City FC will look to break a four-match winless streak in league play when they host FC Cincinnati at Yankee Stadium this Wednesday night.
NYCFC (3-3-2, 11 points) is coming off a 2-1 defeat to Charlotte FC last Saturday, marking a continued slide in recent results. Despite the loss, head coach Pascal Jansen remained optimistic in his assessment of the team's performance, speaking to reporters on Monday.
"We played a good game. It was a tough result, but game-wise, strategy-wise, and play style-wise, it was a good game from our side, but unfortunately not good enough," Jansen said. "But it's something that helps you go forward into the next sequence of games."
One of the bright spots for NYCFC this season has been the performance of Nicolas Fernandez, who scored in the third minute of second-half stoppage time in Saturday's match. With six goals in eight appearances this season, Fernandez has already matched his goal tally from last year, when he finished with just three in 11 matches (10 starts).
"We were just talking about that today, that I've matched my (number of) league goals from last year," Fernandez said. "Every year, I set myself a target of what I want to achieve. Luckily, it's been happening this season. Just have to continue on that streak."
Despite their recent struggles, NYCFC will look to bounce back against FC Cincinnati, who are also enduring a tough road campaign. Cincinnati (2-4-2, 8 points) has yet to win an away match this season, going 0-3-1 in their last four road games.
However, Cincinnati showed some resilience with a 3-3 draw against the Chicago Fire last Saturday at home. Evander played a key role in the comeback, converting a penalty in the 79th minute and assisting in Dje D'Avilla's own goal seven minutes later to help Cincinnati erase a 3-1 halftime deficit.
"Play-wise, there’s been a lot of positives, but now that needs to translate into the wins," said FC Cincinnati head coach Pat Noonan on Tuesday. "I’ve been more pleased in the last two games with some of the overall play despite those results not being what we’d like."
Last season, NYCFC enjoyed success against Cincinnati, earning a pair of 1-0 victories in their two meetings.
Both teams will be eager to get back on track, and this midweek clash is shaping up to be an exciting contest as they fight for valuable points in the MLS standings.
