Paris Saint-Germain forward Ousmane Dembele delivered a masterclass performance, scoring twice as PSG thrashed Olympique de Marseille 5-0 on Sunday to reclaim the top spot in Ligue 1.

The Ballon d’Or winner netted two expertly crafted first-half goals, before a second-half own goal and strikes from substitutes Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Lee Kang-in secured a dominant victory for the reigning champions.

Racing Lens had briefly claimed first place on Saturday after a 3-1 home win over Stade Rennais, moving to 49 points, but PSG now lead the league with 51 points from 21 matches. Marseille remain fourth with 39 points.

Dembele opened the scoring in the 12th minute with a simple finish, set up by Nuno Mendes’ blistering run down the left. Mendes, who was put through by Desire Doue, swept the ball across the goal for Dembele to side-foot home.

His second goal in the 37th minute showcased the dribbling brilliance that earned him football’s most prestigious individual award last year. Dembele breezed past two Marseille defenders before toe-poking the ball into the net.

PSG’s third goal came in the 64th minute when Marseille defender Facundo Medina inadvertently headed a cross from Joao Neves into his own net. Just two minutes later, Kvaratskhelia struck a stunning volley to make it 4-0.

Lee Kang-in completed the rout in the 74th minute, curling a shot from the edge of the box into the corner of the goal to seal PSG’s biggest win over their long-standing rivals.

The match was briefly paused in the 70th minute after referee Willy Delajod warned PSG fans to stop discriminatory chants.

With this emphatic win, PSG reestablish themselves at the top of Ligue 1, sending a strong message to their title rivals.
