NEWCASTLE, England — Yoane Wissa scored his first Champions League goal as Newcastle United secured a convincing 3-0 home win over PSV Eindhoven at St James’ Park on Wednesday, earning their first-ever place in the knockout stages of the competition.
The victory moved Newcastle up to seventh in the group standings with 13 points from seven matches, putting them on track for automatic qualification to the last 16. PSV, meanwhile, sit in 22nd place with eight points and still face a tough task to advance.
How the Group Works
The top eight teams in the standings automatically qualify for the Champions League Round of 16. Teams ranked 9th to 24th will enter a playoff round to determine the remaining eight qualifiers.
Newcastle Takes Control Early
PSV’s defensive hesitation handed Newcastle two early goals before halftime. Wissa opened the scoring in the 8th minute after PSV goalkeeper Matej Kovar failed to clear the ball properly. Bruno Guimaraes collected the ball and set up Joelinton, whose pass allowed Wissa to finish from 12 yards.
Newcastle doubled their lead on the 30-minute mark after another PSV mistake. A weak back-pass from defender Yarek Gasiorowski to Kovar was intercepted by Wissa, who found Anthony Gordon for an easy tap-in.
A Setback but Still Dominant
Newcastle suffered a setback when captain Bruno Guimaraes limped off just before halftime due to an ankle injury. Despite the loss of their midfield leader, Newcastle continued to dominate the match.
They sealed the win in the 65th minute when Harvey Barnes drove into the box, bypassed Gasiorowski, and finished low into the far corner.
Strong Defense Leads the Way
Newcastle’s clean sheet was a key highlight, as only league leaders Arsenal (2 goals conceded) have allowed fewer goals than Newcastle’s six in the competition. Their strong defensive performance has been a major factor in their impressive campaign.
PSV’s Struggles Continue
PSV entered the game having lost just one of their last 21 matches in all competitions, but they were clearly second best against Newcastle.
The Dutch champions now face Bayern Munich in their final group match on Tuesday and will likely need at least a point to secure a place in the knockout stage.
