Al-Ahli Advances to Consecutive Asian Champions League Final with 2-1 Victory over Vissel Kobe
JEDDAH – Defending champions Al-Ahli fought back from a goal down to secure a 2-1 win over Japan's Vissel Kobe in the semi-finals of the Asian Champions League Elite on Monday. Ivan Toney's 70th-minute strike ensured that Al-Ahli would advance to the final for the second consecutive year.
Vissel Kobe took the lead in the 31st minute through Yoshinori Muto, but Al-Ahli responded in the second half. Galeno equalized with a powerful strike in the 62nd minute before Toney's precision finish eight minutes later put the Saudi Pro League side ahead.
This victory sees Al-Ahli remain on course to become the first team since 2005 (Al-Ittihad) to win back-to-back titles. Head coach Matthias Jaissle expressed his pride after the match, saying, "We're really proud again to be in the final, back-to-back is something special and a huge honor and privilege. The game was not easy, as always in this stage, in a semi-final in this competition. Details decided the game."
Muto Puts Vissel Kobe Ahead
The Japanese side initially took the lead in the 31st minute, thanks to a well-executed set-piece. Katsuya Nagato’s free kick from midfield was nodded across goal by Yuya Osako to the unmarked Muto, who slotted the ball past Al-Ahli goalkeeper Edouard Mendy to give Vissel Kobe the advantage.
Al-Ahli came close to equalizing in stoppage time before the break when Rayan Hamed’s header from Galeno’s free kick hit the far post. Moments later, Toney’s attempt to flick in a cross from Enzo Millot narrowly missed.
Al-Ahli's Resilience Shines
In the second half, Al-Ahli came out strong. Franck Kessie headed wide just seconds after the restart, and Toney’s goal was ruled out for offside five minutes later. Vissel Kobe had a chance to extend their lead when Daiju Sasaki’s shot from close range hit the crossbar after a brilliant assist from Mitsuki Hidaka.
But it was Galeno who brought Al-Ahli level in the 62nd minute with a stunning 25-yard strike that rocketed past Vissel Kobe goalkeeper Daiya Maekawa.
Eight minutes later, Toney sealed the win for Al-Ahli. After a botched clearance by Maekawa on Galeno’s cross, Toney calmly slotted the ball past three defenders to give his side the lead.
Looking Ahead to the Final
Al-Ahli will now wait to face either Shabab Al-Ahli from the United Arab Emirates or Japan's Machida Zelvia in the final. The two teams are set to meet on Tuesday for the right to face Al-Ahli in the decisive clash.
