Monaco's Valentin Vacherot secured a thrilling 7-6(6), 7-5 victory over world number five Lorenzo Musetti at the Monte-Carlo Masters on Wednesday, marking a career milestone in front of an ecstatic home crowd.
The win was particularly special for the 27-year-old, who became just the second Monegasque player, after his half-brother and coach Benjamin Balleret, to reach the third round of the prestigious tournament.
This triumph also added to his impressive record, as it marked his second career win over a top-five ranked player. Vacherot's first such victory came at last year’s Shanghai Masters, where he defeated 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic on his way to claiming his maiden ATP title.
Reflecting on the victory, Vacherot expressed his disbelief: "If someone had told me that my first top-five win of the season, second after Shanghai, would be here on a night session, on the center court that I've been hitting on since I'm six years old, I wouldn't have believed it," Vacherot shared during his on-court interview.
The win also highlighted his deep connection with the clay courts of Monte-Carlo, where he grew up playing tennis for 18 years before transitioning to hard courts for college. "Maybe people don't know that I love clay. I grew up playing here before going to college and learning how to play on hard courts. But this is where I learned how to play tennis," he added.
Vacherot's rise in the tennis world has been meteoric. After his triumph in Shanghai, he shot up from world number 204 to number 40. This year, he reached the third round at the Australian Open, cementing his place among the sport’s rising stars.
Next up for Vacherot is a tough match against Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz on Thursday. With his confidence soaring, the Monegasque will look to continue his dream run at one of the sport’s most iconic tournaments.
