The Presidential Communications Office (PCO) has announced plans to launch an online platform for the public to report cases of fake news on social media and other digital channels.
This initiative is part of the government's ongoing efforts to combat misinformation and disinformation.
During a Palace briefing on Friday, PCO Undersecretary and Palace Press Officer Atty. Claire Castro emphasized that the government will not tolerate the spread of false information and noted that those responsible may face legal action.
“Gagawa ang PCO ng isang website o isang platform kung saan niyo isusumbong lahat ng fake news na nagkakalat at ‘yan ay hindi namin tutulugan at lahat ‘yan ay dapat sampahan ng kaso,” Castro said.
This initiative builds on the PCO’s Oplan Kontra Fake News campaign and the establishment of the Anti-Fake News Desk, which enables citizens to report suspicious online content for review and action by relevant government agencies.
As part of these broader efforts, nine major media organizations—Business Mirror, BusinessWorld, The Daily Tribune, Malaya Business Insight, Manila Bulletin, Manila Standard, The Manila Times, Philippine Daily Inquirer, and The Philippine Star—previously signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the PCO.
This partnership aims to strengthen the fight against misinformation and improve the dissemination of verified information.
PCO Secretary Dave Gomez stated that the partnership aims to rebuild public trust, promote media literacy, and encourage critical thinking.
He also noted that on April 7, the PCO referred at least three alleged fake news posts to the Department of Justice (DOJ) for investigation, specifically those involving false information regarding the country’s energy situation.
Gomez further warned that individuals spreading false claims about the First Family may face legal consequences.
On the other hand, Castro addressed and debunked recent misinformation regarding the President’s health and alleged government inaction, emphasizing that the administration continues to function effectively and respond to national issues.
“Kitang kita natin kung papaanong gumalaw ang Pangulo at kung papaano magtrabaho ang gobyerno,” she said.
