Total eclipse hype fuels astrotourism boom in Spain’s 'empty' regions

Spain is set to welcome an estimated 10 million “astrotourists” as a rare total solar eclipse on August 12 draws global visitors to rural regions along its path. Spain is preparing for a rare celestial event that is set to draw millions of visitors away from its traditional beach hotspots and into the country’s quieter interior.

A total solar eclipse on August 12 is expected to attract around 10 million foreign “astrotourists”, many travelling to rural areas in northwestern and central Spain that lie along the eclipse’s path.

Scientists and astronomy enthusiasts say the experience will be unforgettable. "Nature comes to a standstill during the total phase of a solar eclipse. It’s a marvel," told Reuters astronomer Alejandro Vera.

The influx is already transforming so‑called “empty Spain”. International hotel bookings in smaller cities along the eclipse path have surged, and rural areas are seeing a sharp rise in demand.

Around 30,000 visitors are expected near the Galactica Sky Observatory in Arcos de las Salinas, while hotels, guesthouses and even wineries are preparing for a wave of international guests.

Local businesses are embracing the opportunity, like Sara Ros, who rents rural cottages near the village of Camañas in eastern Spain.

Ros said she received her first-ever summer bookings from Britain, the United States and Germany, with many saying it was the perfect place to observe the eclipse.
