Executive Secretary Ralph Recto and Chinese Ambassador to the Philippines Jing Quan recently reviewed bilateral relations, specifically addressing tensions in the South China Sea and the potential for expanded economic cooperation between the two nations.

According to the Office of the Executive Secretary (OES), the meeting was held on April 14.

During the courtesy call, the Chinese envoy noted the resumption of dialogues intended to improve bilateral relations and expressed hope for additional high-level visits later this year.

Several key areas of economic cooperation were addressed during the discussions, including energy concerns, global supply challenges, and opportunities to enhance tourism and people-to-people exchanges.

Both sides also explored the possibility of increasing direct flights between Philippine and Chinese cities.

The meeting also tackled upcoming regional engagements, note that the Philippines is chairing this year’s ASEAN summits, while China is set to host the APEC meeting in 2026.

Both parties expressed a commitment to mutual support in these roles.

The meeting was attended by officials from the OES and the Department of Foreign Affairs, including DFA Undersecretary Maria Andrelita Austria.
