U.S. President Donald Trump said Thursday that he is lifting tariffs on whiskey from the United Kingdom, in a gesture honoring King Charles on the final day of a royal visit marking the upcoming 250th anniversary of American independence.
The Republican president, who has frequently used tariffs as a foreign policy tool, said in a post on Truth Social that he would soon remove tariffs and related restrictions affecting Scotland’s ability to work with Kentucky on whiskey and bourbon production.
Trump said the move was “in honor of the King and Queen of the United Kingdom.” During the four-day state visit, he repeatedly praised Charles, calling him the “greatest king.”
While the official purpose of the visit was tied to the anniversary commemoration, it also aimed to strengthen relations between the two countries, which have been strained in recent months as the United Kingdom and other European allies declined to join the United States and Israel in a two-month-old conflict with Iran.
“People have wanted to do this for a long time, in that there had been great inter-country trade, especially having to do with the wooden barrels used,” Trump said in the post.
“The King and Queen got me to do something that nobody else was able to do, without hardly even asking! A wonderful honor to have them both in the U.S.A.,” he added.
British Trade Minister Peter Kyle welcomed the decision, saying it would benefit the UK’s Scotch whisky industry.
“This is great news for our Scotch whisky industry, which is worth almost £1 billion in exports and supports thousands of jobs across the UK,” Kyle said.
A Buckingham Palace spokesperson said King Charles “sends his sincere gratitude” for the move, adding that it would make a meaningful difference to the British whisky industry.
“His Majesty will be raising a dram to the President’s thoughtfulness and generous hospitality as he departs the U.S. after a most enjoyable state visit for both Their Majesties in this special anniversary year,” the spokesperson said.
