From timeless fairy tales to modern reimaginings, Cinderella remains one of the most retold stories of all time.
Now, Netflix is putting a fresh spin on the classic tale with a newly announced animated project, revealing both its title and initial cast.
"Mama Mia!" actress Amanda Seyfried has officially joined the upcoming Netflix animated feature “Steps,” where she will voice Cinderella.
The film will be directed by Alyce Tzue (Student Academy Award Gold Medal recipient for the short film Soar) and John Ripa (director of Raya and the Last Dragon and Frozen), and is set for release later this year.
Seyfried, 40, was chosen to voice Cinderella, with the creative team praising her ability to bring depth and relatability to her characters.
A Tudum report quoted Alyce Tzue as saying the goal was “to create a modern heroine with flaws and coping mechanisms,” noting that Seyfried immediately understood the task. She adds, “Her portrayal of Cinderella is hilarious and heartbreaking and refreshingly human.”
Co-director Ripa also describes the actress as “an absolute joy to work with.”
He says Seyfried brings a level of experience and passion that encourages the team to dig deeper into the character, while also highlighting her strong emotional control and vocal performance.
He adds that these elements ultimately shape the performance, saying, “It all comes together to give Cinderella a depth and humor we could’ve never imagined.”
Meanwhile, Seyfried took to Instagram to share a photo of her Cinderella character, captioned “STEPS,” confirming her involvement in the project to fans.
The film will also center on the iconic stepsisters, adding a nostalgic touch to the classic tale.
According to Variety, Seyfried is joined by comedian Ali Wong (Beef, Always Be My Maybe), who will voice Lilith, and Stephanie Hsu (Everything Everywhere All at Once) as Margot—the two stepsisters.
No additional casting details have been revealed yet, including who will play the Fairy Godmother or whether Prince Charming and the stepmother will appear in the film.
Netflix has teased the plot in its latest announcement on social media, offering insight into its take on the story: “When ‘evil’ stepsister Lilith steals the Fairy Godmother’s wand and accidentally wrecks Cinderella’s happily ever after, the two must team up to save the kingdom… and maybe become real sisters along the way.”
Photos shared online also showcase Cinderella’s character design, featuring her alongside a mouse companion perched on her shoulder. Another image reveals Lilith alongside Cinderella holding the iconic glass slipper.
