Singer Charli xcx, actor Hugh Jackman and pop star Katy Perry were among the celebrities walking the carpet at New York City's Metropolitan Museum of Art's annual gala on Monday. (May 4).
The annual fundraiser, held on the first Monday in May, raises money for the museum's Costume Institute and is timed to celebrate the opening of its major spring fashion exhibition. This year's dress code is "Fashion is Art," inviting guests to interpret fashion as an embodied art form.
Beyoncé, Nicole Kidman, Venus Williams and Anna Wintour serve as co-chairs for the Costume Institute fundraiser.
The gala featured some standout outfits, with Perry choosing to cover her face in a silver mask while theatre producer Jordan Roth walked with a mannequin clinging to his back.
Actor Luke Evans was covered head to toe in burgundy leather in a look inspired by queer fetish subculture, particularly the sketches of queer artist Tom of Finland. Singer Sam Smith donned a floor-length black mermaid gown with feathered headgear.
Smith is a member of the gala host committee alongside Sabrina Carpenter, Doja Cat, Angela Bassett, Misty Copeland, LISA and Teyana Taylor. The committee is co-chaired by Belgian fashion designer Anthony Vaccarello and actor Zoë Kravitz, who walked the carpet together.
Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez Bezos, lead sponsors of the gala and exhibition, serve as honorary chairs.
