A strong magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck Mindanao on Monday morning prompting government authorities to issue tsunami warnings and prompted President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to send assistance to Mindanao from the national government.

General Santos City, Mahayhay, and other towns in Mindanao sustained heavy damage and loss of life. The earthquake which originated in the Cotabato Trench, affected several areas in Mindanao.

Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) Director Teresito Bacolcol said those in areas affected by the magnitude 7.8 Sarangani earthquake should expect aftershocks and remain evacuated until the lifting of the tsunami warning.
