In what seems like life imitating art, American singer and actress Hilary Duff delivered the commencement speech at Northeastern University in Boston on Wednesday, April 29.

Fans couldn’t help but notice how similar her iconic junior high graduation scene in The Lizzie McGuire Movie was, where she also delivered a memorable speech, but only this time, it was real life.

Dressed in a red and black academic regalia, Duff’s 10-minute speech was a mix of humor, personal reflection, and inspiration.

She began by congratulating the graduates, saying, “This is your day to be celebrated, but thank you for my warm welcome.”

Duff, 38 also thanked the faculty, staff and university for the invitation. “I am honored to be a part of this moment in time with all of you.”

She took a moment to appreciate the families in attendance, Duff praised their role in supporting the graduates. “I admire your courage in releasing your children into the world,” she said, calling it “truly a beautiful thing.”

She then reflected on her unconventional education, sharing that her formal schooling ended in third grade. Duff said she never experienced typical school milestones like “passing notes or having a locker,” and had never worn “one of these bad boys,” referring to a graduation gown.

Despite that, she expressed deep admiration for the graduates’ academic journey and the effort it took to reach the milestone.

Duff shared that she began working when she was just seven and that she learned to say “yes” to every opportunity. “Yes to the next project. Yes to saying yes.” But over time, she realized that constant acceptance left her disconnected from her own voice.

“When someone would ask me what’s next? I felt like a failure,” she admitted. “Just because something is a good opportunity, it doesn't mean it's right.”

Realizing her predicament, she took a break from music, not because she lacked direction, but because she needed time to realign with her authentic self. “Saying no wasn’t rejection, but redirection,” she said.

“I’m grateful I had the ability to take that pause.” During that time, she focused on rebuilding her relationships, growing her family, and investing in her business.

Duff encouraged graduates to embrace a similar mindset, reminding them that success is not about saying yes to everything but about making intentional choices.

“Don’t forget to pause and appreciate how far you’ve come,” she said. “Then you can look forward and see all that’s yet to come.”

She also praised Northeastern’s experiential learning model, noting that many of the jobs graduates will hold in the future may not yet exist. “But don’t let headlines scare you. What you do may change, but who you are doesn’t have to.”

She encouraged graduates to see themselves as the “architects of their own lives,” choosing what excites them, challenges them, and helps them grow.

In closing, Duff expressed gratitude to her support system and encouraged graduates to do the same. “If you can hug your parents, your parental figures, your pillars, your mentors—text them back every now and then,” she said with a smile.

She ended with a cheerful, “Go Huskies!” After her speech, Duff was presented with a certificate in recognition of her role as a commencement speaker.

Duff later posted on social media thanking Northeastern and Boston for the warm welcome, congratulated the Class of 2026, and declared that becoming a commencement speaker was now officially part of her resume.
