The lead stars of the 2016 Korean drama “Guardian: The Lonely and Great God”, better known as “Goblin,” are reuniting for a 10th anniversary special.
For the anniversary special, Gong Yoo, Kim Go-eun, Lee Dong-wook, and Yoo In-na will come together for the first time in years, tvN announced on Wednesday. They’ll take a short trip and reminisce about some of the drama’s most memorable scenes, iconic lines, and the lasting impact the show had on both the cast and fans.
Kim Shin (Gong Yoo) is an immortal goblin who guides and protects souls, but to finally end his eternal life, he must find a human bride. Ji Eun Tak (Go-eun), a high school student with a painful past, unexpectedly summons him, beginning their story.
Meanwhile, Shin also serves as the landlord for a grim reaper (Dong-wook) , whose job is to escort souls to the afterlife. The reaper has his own bittersweet connection with Sunny (Yoo In-na), a beloved chicken shop owner. When the lives of these four intersect, their destinies become deeply intertwined, leading to dramatic and emotional changes for each of them.
When “Goblin” first aired on tvN in 2016, it broke the 20% ratings mark, a milestone for cable dramas at the time, according to The Korea Times. Even after the finale, the series continued to reach new audiences worldwide through streaming platforms, solidifying its status as one of the most influential Korean dramas of its time.
The fantasy-romance drama was widely praised for its emotional dialogue and performances, striking visual style, and a soundtrack that dominated the charts for months.
In 2017, Goblin earned major accolades, including the Baeksang Arts Awards Grand Awards for screenwriter Kim Eun-sook, Best Actor for Gong Yoo, and Best Drama at the Cable TV Awards. Its soundtrack was also recognized, with Ailee winning the OST Award for her song “I’ll Go to You Like the First Snow.”
According to The Chosun Daily, tvN described Goblin as an iconic drama that continues to resonate with viewers. The anniversary special will celebrate “the laughter, emotions, and enduring chemistry of the cast” while revisiting the scenes and moments that fans still cherish today.
The special is scheduled to air in the first half of the year.
