The new “Lord of the Flies” series opened to strong critical reception, earning a 96% “Certified Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Critics have described the adaptation as a visceral and faithful retelling that stays close to the book’s dark allegorical story of schoolboys stranded on a deserted island and descending into savagery.
The limited series is a four-episode retelling of William Golding’s classic novel, with a screenplay by award-winning writer Jack Thorne (Adolescence) and directed by Mark Munden (The Sympathizer).
Much of the praise has gone to the young ensemble cast, with reviewers highlighting their intense and convincing performances. The series, filmed on location in Malaysia, is also noted for its striking visual style.
According to Forbes, the show debuted at number four on Netflix’s U.S. Top 10, though it is not currently available on Netflix Philippines.
While critics have responded very positively, some audience reactions are more mixed, with a 55% score on Rotten Tomatoes’ Popcornmeter. Overall, the series has been praised for bringing a “fresh, youthful energy” to the story while maintaining the novel’s bleak and symbolic tone.
This marks a notable addition to the legacy of "Lord of the Flies," which has previously been adapted into three major films: the 1963 British black-and-white version, the 1975 Filipino adaptation titled “Alkitrang Dugo,” and the 1990 American film. The new series is the first television adaptation of the story.
