Lorde is now officially an independent artist. After her contract with Universal Music Group (UMG) expired last December, which she signed when she was just 12, she chose not to renew it.

On Wednesday, March 18, Variety reports that the Kiwi singer-songwriter shared the news directly with fans and subscribers through audio recordings sent through her official messaging channels. The recordings weren’t posted publicly though some fans shared it on social media platforms like Instagram.

In the audio messages, Lorde, 29,  reflected on her long history with UMG. “I have been in that contract for a very long time, since I was 12 years, when I signed my first development deal with Universal,” she said.

“I adore them. They’re incredible people, and I had an amazing experience with them. But the truth is, a 12-year-old girl pre-sold her creative output before she even knew what she was signing away.”

Lorde explained that after nearly two decades, she wanted a “clean slate."  While she might sign a deal again in the future, she needed a moment where nothing she created was being bought or sold.

“It does feel different. It sounds like it wouldn’t, but it really does. I feel a sense of openness and possibility and kind of inspiring. Newness is kind of a clean slate.”

She also shared how she’s spending her downtime on tour, enjoying simple moments like playing chess at her hotel. “Having to be in the moment feels right,” she said.

Her fourth album, Virgin, released in June 2025 through UMG was her last under the label. Lorde launched her music career in 2009 when she signed her first development deal with Universal Music Group (UMG). She became known for her songs Team, Ribs and Royals.

Lorde is currently on her Ultrasound World Tour, performing around the globe throughout 2026.
