"Scooby-Doo" actor Matthew Lillard is officially stepping into the DC Universe, joining the cast of "Superman: Man of Tomorrow," the upcoming sequel to the 2025 film "Superman."
Lillard’s casting follows his recent public interest in joining the franchise. Speaking earlier at Los Angeles Comic-Con, he said he had been hoping for an invitation from filmmaker James Gunn, as reported by Variety, adding, “I keep waiting for that invitation.”
Lillard, 56, also reflected on his longstanding relationship with Gunn, considering him as one of his dear friends. The two previously worked together more than two decades ago on "Scooby-Doo" (2002) and "Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed" (2004), where Lillard played Shaggy while Gunn wrote the screenplays.
On May 7, Gunn, 59, shared photos with Lillard on social media, captioning them, “Just casually hanging out with my long time friend for no reason.”
According to Deadline, Lillard’s role in "Man of Tomorrow" has not yet been revealed. However, he is confirmed to appear alongside David Corenswet, who reprises his role as Superman. Lillard also joins an ensemble cast that includes Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, and Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl.
Outside of the DC project, Lillard has also recently appeared in “Scream 7,” “Cross,” and “Daredevil: Born Again.”
The upcoming sequel is written and directed by Gunn himself and is currently in production, with a cinema release scheduled for July 9, 2027.
