Oscar-winning actors Will Smith and Michael B. Jordan have been greenlighted to star in “I Am Legend 2,” as the long-awaited sequel moves forward in development at Warner Bros. 

Steven Caple Jr. is confirmed to direct the project, which has been in various stages of discussion since it was first announced in 2022.

According to Collider, Caple confirmed during a press junket for the “Man on Fire” remake that he is officially directing the film. His involvement reunites him with Michael B. Jordan, 39, following their collaboration on Creed II, where Jordan also starred.

The “Sinners” actor will star alongside Smith, 57, who led the original 2007 film, while Akiva Goldsman returns to write the script.

Reports from  Yahoo Entertainment indicate that the sequel will follow the alternate ending of the first movie rather than the theatrical version. In the theatrical cut, Smith’s character dies by sacrificing himself.

In the alternate ending, however, he survives, revealing a different perspective of the infected. This approach aligns more closely with Richard Matheson’s novel.

The original action-horror and sci-fi film, based on Matheson’s 1954 novel, follows Neville (Smith’s character), a military scientist and one of a few human survivors of a man-made plague. He roams a post-apocalyptic New York City while searching for other survivors and working on a cure using his own immune blood.

The sequel is still in development and has no confirmed release date yet.
