Senator Francis "Chiz" Escudero has expressed his solidarity with the residents of Albay as the Bicol region continues to be affected by ashfall and pyroclastic density currents (PDCs) resulting from the heightened activity of Mayon Volcano.

In a statement, Escudero, who hails from the Bicol region, has called on the public to observe safety advisories strictly.

He also assured local governments that he is closely monitoring the situation and stands ready to provide assistance as necessary.

“Nakikiisa ako sa ating mga kababayan sa Albay sa gitna ng patuloy na aktibidad ng Bulkang Mayon. Hinihikayat ko ang lahat na sundin ang mga abiso ng mga awtoridad at unahin ang kanilang kaligtasan. Patuloy kong mino-monitor ang sitwasyon at handa akong tumulong anumang oras kung kinakailangan,” the Bicolano senator said.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology reported that PDCs were observed along the Mi-isi Gully on Mayon’s southern to southwestern slopes, with Alert Level 3 still in place, indicating a high level of volcanic unrest.

According to PHIVOLCS, the activity was triggered by a lava collapse at around 4:28 p.m., followed by minor Strombolian eruptions beginning at about 4:50 p.m., which produced rockfalls and ash emissions affecting nearby communities.

Ashfall was recorded in parts of Legazpi City, as well as in the towns of Camalig, Guinobatan, and Daraga on Saturday afternoon.

Local authorities advised residents to remain indoors, keep doors and windows closed, and use face masks or damp cloths for protection during ashfall. They also warned the public to stay away from river channels and gullies where volcanic materials may flow as monitoring continues.

Escudero further urged residents to remain vigilant and rely only on official updates from PHIVOLCS and local authorities, stressing that preparedness and cooperation are crucial as Mayon’s activity persists.
