Self-check-in kiosks at Luis Munoz Marin International Airport display an "Operational Update" message after Spirit Airlines announced it was ceasing operations early Saturday amid an impasse in talks with some creditors over a $500 million government bailout plan, in Carolina, Puerto Rico, May 2, 2026.

Frustrated passengers stranded by the collapse of bankrupt discount Spirit Airlines scrambled to figure out how to get to their destinations after the discount carrier ceased operations on Saturday, the industry's first casualty linked to the Iran war.

The collapse overnight of the carrier following a doubling in jet fuel prices during the two-month-old Iran war highlights the unintended consequences of the U.S.-Israel war against Iran, despite an uneasy ceasefire. While Spirit was already struggling to turn a profit before the fuel shock, global carriers are contending with surging jet fuel prices as Iran continues to halt nearly all traffic through the Strait of Hormuz and the U.S. Navy blockades Iranian ports.

At the Orlando International Airport, a digital departure display sign was filled with bright red notifications of canceled Spirit flights that had destinations everywhere from Nashville to San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Passengers said they were offered no immediate refunds or hotel vouchers to compensate them for their loss. Some, like Jenitzel Granados whose family was flying home to Puerto Rico, said they had to call a relative to help pay the unexpected additional cost of flights.

“They did not give us any refunds. We had to call one of our uncles so if he could help us pay for the next flight because we did not have any money. We had to pay 1,600 (dollars) for the flight for today but we had to pay someone to help us because we couldn’t afford it,” she said.

Nonyae McPherson said her family was stranded between connecting flights with three children.

“We had to book new flights with a different airline. It’s just been us here with three kids, two 5-year-olds and an 11-month old, and we’ve just been at the airport all night. First they told us that they were going to give us hotels, Uber and food vouchers but then they cancelled and said they couldn’t give it to us so we’ve just been sitting here all night,” she said.

No U.S. carrier of Spirit's size - it accounted for 5% of U.S. flights last year - has liquidated in two decades. Spirit helped keep fares lower in markets where it competed against major carriers.
