Storm Harry pounded the Catalonia seafront on Tuesday (January 20) evening, unleashing large waves that forced the closure of beaches along the Barcelona coast as authorities activated emergency plans.
Waves reached up to 2.5 metres, according to local officials, who warned residents to avoid the shoreline.
Earlier in the day heavy rains triggered a fatal commuter‑train derailment near Barcelona, killing the driver and seriously injuring four passengers when a containment wall collapsed onto the track.
Civil Protection maintained coastal warnings as rough seas continued to batter parts of Catalonia, including Girona, one of the worst‑hit areas.
