Bubba the French bulldog took luxury pet fashion to sparkling new heights on Wednesday (April 15), lounging in the Petit Salon with treats and water at the Baccarat Hotel New York in a tuxedo vest and a diamond-encrusted collar.
The jeweled showcase marked the launch of the Canine Couture Diamond Experience, an exclusive partnership between the hotel and The D Diamond New York, a luxury jewelry brand specializing in handcrafted 18K gold and diamond collars and charms for dogs.
The new offering is aimed at hotel guests who want their four-legged companions dressed with as much care as they are. The service includes a private in-room consultation led by The D Diamond New York founder and CEO Racheli Waters Shamir, who guides clients through a personalized design process over champagne.
Shamir said the brand was born out of her love for rescue dogs, especially her own, Luli and Fancy.
"I love dogs. I think dogs give you more than you give them - especially love, especially kindness," she said. "The story began with my dogs, when I saved them and I rescued them from an L.A. shelter."
Each commissioned piece is handcrafted in New York and designed around a dog's personality and lifestyle, according to the hotel and brand. The collars can include diamond-studded charms and special collaboration details, including a ruby accent described as Baccarat's signature hallmark. Some pieces also feature an exclusive charm inspired by the hotel's style and available only through the partnership.
The consultation is priced at $1,000, which is credited toward any commissioned piece priced at $7,500 or more.
Shamir said her dog collars have drawn strong attention because of their unusual blend of sentiment, craftsmanship and extravagance.
"It's something they never saw before and it's really hard to get," she said.
Shamir said the company's mission also includes a charitable component, with 10% of profits going to no-kill shelters around New York City.
"Bringing it back to the community is the number one priority in my company and my personal life as well," she said. "I believe in giving another and second chance to any dogs in the world, no matter what their condition, and just give them a family that will give them a very good life like I did to mine."
The names of several pieces in the collection are drawn from Shamir's own dogs and the bond she shares with them. Others reflect what she described as a deeper emotional meaning, including love-themed and heart-shaped designs created for owners willing to invest in highly specialized craftsmanship for their pets.
At least for one afternoon in Manhattan, the old saying got a polished new twist: diamonds may still be a girl's best friend, but at the Baccarat, they now belong to the dogs too.
