From research labs to love - 1,500 rescued Beagles ready for new homes
About 1,500 beagles formerly bred for laboratory research are being released from Ridglan Farms and placed into loving homes after a landmark agreement with animal welfare groups. It’s a new beginning for 1,500 beagles — dogs once destined for research labs are now on their way to loving homes.
After over six decades of breeding dogs, Wisconsin-based Ridglan Farms has agreed to release the hounds after being paid an undisclosed amount by Big Dog Ranch Rescue and the Center for a Humane Economy.
“This is the happiest week of my life… knowing these dogs finally have a great future,” said Lauree Simmons, CEO and Founder of Big Dog Ranch Rescue.
The first 300 pups rolled out on Friday (May 2), tails with more being released every day.
“It’s amazing to see the dogs finally getting out and experiencing love and joy and freedom,” said Zoe Rosenberg, animal rights activist with Direct Action Everywhere, an organization she says has been pushing since 2017 for the release of dogs.
In March, activists broke into Ridglan Farms and took 30 dogs.
In April, officers used pepper spray and tear gas on protesters trying to get into the facility to free more dogs.
63 people were referred to prosecutors for charges tied to the break‑in.
Ridglan Farms is set to surrender its breeding license on July 1 as part of a deal to avoid felony animal mistreatment charges— closing a chapter that spanned more than 60 years.
And for these beagles, a brand‑new one is just beginning.
A thousand of the dogs will be placed through Big Dog Ranch Rescue, with the rest cared for by the Center for a Humane Economy.
Their journey home is already underway — and for many, the wait for a family won’t be long.
Big Dog Ranch Rescue says adoption interest has been overwhelming — more than 700 families have already applied.
