One of Germany's most important seasons has begun - asparagus season. From the start of April to mid June, Germans enjoy white asparagus, served traditionally with a béchamel sauce. The long and cold winter helped the asparagus grow, with farmers in Beelitz, southeast from Germany's capital Berlin, expecting a good season.
Beelitz is one of Germany's regions well-known for growing asparagus, the sandy soil and relatively mild climate making the asparagus especially soft and intense.
