Senator Loren Legarda recently emphasized the vital link between food security and cultural heritage in observance of Filipino Food Month this April.
She noted that protecting farmers and fisherfolk is essential to sustaining Filipino families and preserving the traditions that define the nation.
“Filipino Food Month reminds us that food is more than nourishment. It is culture, memory, and strength. Protecting our farmers and fisherfolk ensures that families can continue to gather around the table with dignity and hope,” she said.
This year’s theme, “Connected by Taste: Filipino Food in the Flavors of ASEAN,” coincides with the Philippines’ hosting of the ASEAN Summit, highlighting how cuisine fosters regional ties.
She also pointed to the inclusion of Manila, its surrounding areas, and Cebu in the Michelin Guide 2026 selection as a milestone for Philippine gastronomy.
According to Legarda, one restaurant in Makati earned two Michelin stars, while eight others across Makati, Taguig, Parañaque, and Cavite received one star each.
In addition, 25 establishments were given the Bib Gourmand distinction, and 74 more were listed as Michelin Selected, out of a total of 108 establishments evaluated.
As chairperson of the Senate Committee on Culture and the Arts, Senator Legarda has filed Senate Bill No. 822 (the Philippine Culinary Heritage Act) to institutionalize the preservation of culinary traditions.
“The world is finally tasting what we have long known—that Filipino food tells our story, from mountain to coast, from the labor of our farmers to the joy of our families,” Legarda said.
As chair of the Senate Committee on Culture and the Arts, Legarda has filed Senate Bill No. 822, also known as the Philippine Culinary Heritage Act, which aims to institutionalize efforts to preserve and promote the country’s culinary traditions.
The proposed measure seeks to create a Committee on Philippine Gastronomy and Culinary Heritage under the National Commission for Culture and the Arts to oversee initiatives such as culinary mapping, support for local food producers, and the continued observance of Filipino Food Month.
Legarda added that her push for food security is also reflected in her authorship of the proposed Bayanihan 3: Power to the People Act, which aims to provide direct assistance to households during periods of economic disruption, including food support for low-income families.
“Food has always been close to my heart because I often gather ingredients from my own backyard,” Legarda shared.
“In difficult times, these meals remind us of who we are—resilient, resourceful, and united. The Filipino table remains a place of nourishment, culture, and strength that continues to bring our people together.”
